Renegades add QB Luis Perez following Sloter release
The former Vegas Vipers quarterback is fifth in the XFL for passing yards.
Under 24 hours removed from the surprise release of Kyle Sloter, the Arlington Renegades have refilled their quarterback room.
The XFL announced Tuesday afternoon that the Renegades and the Vegas Vipers completed a trade sending quarterback Luis Perez to Arlington in return for linebacker Ryan Mueller.
The Renegades’ offense has gone through multiple changes over the past few weeks, adding the likes of wide receivers Victor Bolden and JaVonta Payton while parting with receiver Jordan Smallwood and Sloter.
Adding Perez should be a major bump for an offense still finding its footing. Both Sloter and Drew Plitt — who remains on the Renegades roster — struggled to make a major impression under center.
Perez, a former Texas A&M-Commerce player, has played in five of six games this season. He has amassed 901 passing yards (5th in XFL) and eight touchdowns (4th in XFL) on a 65.3% completion rate (3rd in XFL min. 50 attempts).
In week one, Perez faced off against the Renegades, throwing for 249 yards in the air and three touchdowns.
Mueller was selected by the Renegades in the seventh round of the defensive front seven phase of the XFL Draft. The former Kansas State standout was cut at the end of camp before re-signing on March 15. He had yet to make an appearance for Arlington.
The Renegades (3-3) have a short week, opening up the week of play on Friday against the Seattle Sea Dragons (4-2). So it may be unlikely Perez starts the game, but if he starts gelling in the system quickly, don’t be surprised to see him take the field at Choctaw Stadium.
